The 2025 Future of Jobs Report released by the World Economic Forum projects the creation of over 170 million new jobs by the end of the decade. This report analyzes global macro trends that are impacting the labor market and explores the jobs that will see the most significant increase in demand, as well as the necessary skills for individuals to succeed in these jobs.
The report highlights that the global labor market is undergoing a transformation driven by technological advancements, a shift towards a greener economy, as well as demographic and economic changes. Currently, emerging roles make up fourteen percent of total global employment, with an estimated 92 million positions set to be displaced while creating 170 million new job opportunities. This indicates a net increase of 78 million jobs over the period.
To identify the in-demand jobs and required skills, a survey was conducted with over a thousand of the world’s leading employers representing twenty-two distinct industry clusters and over fourteen million employees. The report points to the rise of careers propelled by technological advances like artificial intelligence, highlighting professions such as big data analysts, fintech engineers, artificial intelligence and machine learning specialists, and more.
The report also presents the fifteen occupations expected to experience the highest net growth and reduction based on estimates from surveyed businesses and data from the International Labour Organization. These occupations encompass various fields including farming, software development, construction, and retail sales.
The green transition trend, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and addressing climate challenges, is projected to create 34 million new jobs by 2030 in farming and agriculture. Automation and digitization are also expected to drive job growth in sectors like food processing and care services, responding to demographic shifts and increasing demand.
Employment opportunities requiring skills in artificial intelligence, big data, networking, cybersecurity, and technological literacy are deemed crucial for the future job market. In addition, soft skills like creativity, resilience, flexibility, agility, curiosity, and lifelong learning are increasingly important, along with creative thinking, leadership, analytical thinking, talent management, and environmental stewardship skills.
Companies are investing in reskilling and upskilling programs to prepare their workforce for evolving market demands. The Centre for the New Economy and Society of the World Economic Forum collaborates with businesses, academic institutions, and governments through initiatives like the Reskilling Revolution and the Jobs Initiative to help individuals worldwide adapt to the changing world of work.
As the future of work continues to evolve, it will be essential to provide support for workers to acquire a balance of technical and human skills. By equipping individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge, the goal is to ensure that workers are prepared for the economy of the future. Through collaborative efforts and ongoing initiatives, the World Economic Forum is committed to shaping a future of work that is sustainable, inclusive, and resilient.
